DHEA Vaginal

What is Vaginal DHEA?

Vaginal DHEA is a hormone cream or suppository used to treat vaginal dryness, thinning, and pain during sex in postmenopausal women. It helps restore tissue health by converting locally into estrogen and androgens without significantly raising hormone levels in the blood.

Your doctor prescribed vaginal DHEA (cream or suppository), a plant-based hormone that helps restore vaginal tissue, moisture, and sexual comfort. It acts locally and mimics what your body naturally produces.

Within a few weeks, you may notice:

  • Less vaginal dryness, irritation, and pain
  • Improved lubrication and comfort during sex
  • Increased sensation, desire, and arousal

With continued use, DHEA may:

  • Rebuild healthy vaginal lining and pH
  • Support nerve sensitivity and improve sexual function
  • Act locally, with little to no effect on hormone levels in the rest of your body
  • Routine bloodwork is not typically needed.
  • Continue with your Pap smears and breast exams as recommended.

Most women tolerate it well. Possible effects include:

  • Mild irritation, itching, or discharge
  • Breast tenderness, mood changes, or headaches
  • Spotting or menstrual changes
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain
  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, hives)
  • Yellowing skin or eyes, or severe fatigue

Let your provider know if you have a history of breast cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Use as indicated by your doctor.
  • Apply at bedtime for best absorption
  • Avoid intercourse right after use to prevent hormone transfer
  • Wash hands after applying
  • Store suppositories in the fridge; creams at room temperature
  • Don’t use tampons while on treatment
  • Let your doctor know if you take glimepiride or other medications
